Can Americans ride in Sweden?

Visitors from the United States can generally ride in Sweden on a valid US motorcycle licence, and many riders also carry an International Driving Permit (IDP). Requirements can depend on the category of your home licence and on the specific rental, so confirm what is accepted before you travel and carry the right documents.

Sweden drives on the right, uses kilometres per hour, and has strict drink-driving limits. Speed limits are signed and enforced, and headlights are required at all times.

What the riding is actually like

Swedish roads are well-maintained and remarkably quiet outside the cities. Expect a mix of fast tarmac and, especially in the north, long sections of graded gravel that is perfectly rideable on an adventure bike. Wildlife — especially moose — is a real hazard at dawn and dusk, so adjust your speed accordingly.

Weather changes fast. Even in summer, a dry morning can turn wet and cold, particularly in the mountains. Pack layers and check the forecast for the regions you are riding through, not just your start point.
